You know, I'd never realized that actress/singer, Doris Day could belt it out, big time, like she did here in "Love Me or Leave Me".... Man-oh-man, there were a couple of real dynamite tunes in this bio flick of Ruth Etting's career where Doris's impressive vocal talents, literally, knocked me out. And I ain't an easy dude to knock out.

Anyway - As the story goes - It was crystal clear, right from the start, that Ruth Etting's singing career would've, most likely, never amounted to anything much had it not been for Chicago racketeer, Martin Snyder (a.k.a. "The Gimp"). This limping ape (played brilliantly by James Gagney) was a tough-minded, shrewd "business-operator" who actually resorted to strong-arm tactics to initially boost Etting's career.

All-in-all - "Love Me or Leave Me" was quite a satisfying and entertaining musical from 1955.

GREAT 1955 bio-pic of Roaring 20's jazz singer Ruth Etting with fab performances by Doris Day, James Cagney, and others.
Quite a show piece for Doris Day's terrific singing and dancing in a flavor I hadn't previously seen or she continued in her later career. The TV Doris Day was much more subdued - here she really lights up the screen.
There are some fun extras with actual footage of Ruth Etting with whom I was not previously familiar.

Contrary to popular belief - I don't shock easily. Well. I don't. So, as anyone can well imagine, it certainly came as quite an unexpected shockeroo for me when I found myself becoming quite captivated with Miss Doris Day's singing in this flick. Now, that was a monumental shock, indeed!

Released in 1955 - "Love Me or Leave Me", which stars Doris Day and James Cagney, is pretty much a musical, bio-flick about Roaring 20's songstress, Ruth Etting.

It covers the highlights of Etting's career from between 1926-1932. In this period of time Ruth became one of the top 10 female torch-singers in America. Ruth was in hot demand, both on radio and live on stage. Some of the greatest songwriters of that era were, literally, penning tunes specifically arranged for Ruth, and her unique singing style.

If you enjoy high-caliber entertainment from the fabulous 50's (the era that gave us Singing In The Rain and Damn Yankees), then check out Love Me or Leave Me. It'll certainly be worth your while..... (*Be sure to watch music video-clip*)

An OK film made better by Jimmy Cagney's performance.
