It seems Grayling is trying to claim a place among English essayists beside Bacon and Russell, in terms of variety, volume, and style (I think this is his fifth or sixth collection of essays). Thoughtful essays on numerous topics, easy - perhaps to easy - to read (the lucidity can mask the depth of thought, a characteristic of Russell's writing). I most liked the lengthier essays on Dworkin's 'Justice For Hedgehogs' , Thucidides, and teachers.
