Hardly a word of truth in this movie. Bad and they lie !!! If you want to watch a great version of what really happened at Bletchley Park watch the Imitation game -much better movie and honest version

Dated and not accurate, judging from what we now know of the real history of enigma but a nice story with a happy ending, not at all like real life.

A somewhat confused story, but still worth a view.

I liked this DVD. I recommend for adults only. It is too sexual for children. It has some violence. The story has a strong plot. It is witty full of surprises. It is a subtle spy movie during the world war. No one was trusted. I felt sorry for the main character who was in love with a spy. He experiences unrequited love.

Tricky but good WW11 thriller!

It was fine. Not as exciting as I had expected. The plot felt rather forced and artificial.

Winston Churchill once declared, “Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” Well, the 2001 movie “Enigma” is a mystery with a riddle inside a conundrum. “Enigma” is a fictionalized account of British attempts to crack the German code by a group of cryptanalyst working at Bletchley Park north of London in the early 1940s. The movie stars Kate Winslet; was directed by Michael Apted (the “Up Series” of documentaries); from a screenplay by Tom Stoppard (“Arcadia” “Shakespeare in Love”). It’s a fine drama and can be nicely paired with the recent based-on-a-true-story film (“The Imitation Game”) about Alan Turing, the brilliant mathematician widely credited with inventing the theoretical underpinnings of the modern computer. He was also a war hero, of sorts, largely responsible for cracking the so-called unbreakable German’s code, Enigma which was used for transmitting military communications. Churchill believed that cracking the German code was the biggest single contribution to allied victory during World War II. Both movies are good and worth watching.

Released in 2001 - Enigma is a fairly intriguing WW2 drama about a burned-out cryptographer who is brought back to active duty at Bletchley Park where several hundred British operatives work day and night to crack the Nazi code. Their goal here is to understand the workings of the German's brilliantly designed "Enigma" machine.

Containing some great material (adapted from Robert Harris' book of the same name), Enigma is an almost faultless re-creation of the period that does get a bit confusing in its latter half.

This film was co-produced by Mick Jagger, who appears briefly in a club scene.

Based on the novel, it boasts an intelligent - but too often confusing and pretentious - screenplay. Yet the direction is terrific and the acting mostly good. A superb performance by Kate Winslet and a chillingly brilliant one by Jeremy Northam. Scenery is gorgeous and the music is beautiful. Mixing fact and fiction make this a compelling story.
Best line: "Drowning herself was Virginia Woolf's greatest contribution to literature."

Well done, but tricky to follow. I found a good synopsis on the IMDB comment section and that made the story more understandable a at that point I realized what a good movie it is.
