This looks like a derivation of Leigh Bardugo's works.

Two stars out of Five

This fantasy novel ticks many of the standard plot boxes with Gods, magic, a dark secret society, pillaging northmen, and street-wise kids. To the author's credit it is not played out in the straight line that many fantasy novels are. The author probably read her George R.R. so thought it advisable to through a few turns into the narrative.

Many plot lines flow into one of two strands of the novel. It is the less interesting of the two strands. The second strand involving an excommunicated member of the aforementioned secret society works better mostly because that character is actually exploring things whereas the other strand is more involved with keeping the gears of the main plot engine turning.

I digress.

I'm not sure if I'll look up further novels in this series. After reading the first half I did some thorough skimming of the rest of the book. Too much fluffy character introspection, not enough action. I'm uncertain how the series will end up which is a good thing though.

Very dark speculative fiction with unlikeable characters. But their stories engage and the book works. Impressive first novel and I intend to pick up the next in the series when it is released.
