Directed by Fred Zinnemann in 1977 based on the memoir "Pentimento" by Lillian Hellman, this American drama depicts both the tragedy of Julia and friendship between Lilly and Julia.
Julia fought against the Nazis in the years prior to World War II.
Although nobody knows exactly what happened to Julia, it turns out to be a sad and tragic story.
Superb is the performance of Jane Fonda.

When it comes to the likes of "Chick Flicks" - I'd confidently say that 1977's "Julia" rates as one from that particular genre that even men can enjoy. This well-crafted movie certainly does deliver some fine moments of storytelling.

This film's story faithfully traces the life-long relationship between real-life playwright Lillian Hellman (played by Jane Fonda) and her dear friend Julia, the spoiled daughter of a wealthy Jewish businessman who, in her twenties, turns her back on her privileged upbringing to staunchly follow her somewhat radical political ideals.

Set in the mid-1930s - Julia and her loyal comrades battle the fierce exigencies of a Nazi regime in war-torn Germany. Wishing desperately to help her friend, Hellman arrives in Germany from the USA and soon finds herself inadvertently drawn into Julia's extreme resistance movement, which immediately poses grave danger to all involved.

"Julia" was adapted for the screen from excerpts of Lillian Hellman's memoirs titled Pentimento. Screenwriter, Alvin Sargent, and actors, Jason Robards and Venessa Redgrave each won an Oscar for their contribution to the success of Julia. This film would feature Meryl Streep in her screen debut.

Fictional portrayal of Jane Fonda supposedly playing Lillian Hellmann as a spy during WW2 , yawn it never happened. Move on.

Good performance by Jane Fonda. The beginning of the movie was slow but it got interesting when Lilian was tapped to smuggle the money to Julia and I was rooting for her not to get caught. I didn't feel that they developed the friendship between Julia and Lilian as well as they could have, not enough for me to feel the depth of their friendship. I was hoping Lilian found Lily in the end, but she didn't and the movie seemed to end abruptly.

A good performance by Jane Fonda but the movie was boring and slow moving, despite Vanessa Redgrave and the storyline.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It is based on the true story of Lillian Hellman and her friend, Julia. I happen to think it is probably the best acting Jane Fonda ever did. The story is suspenseful and totally engrossing.

This 1977 film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards but sadly is mostly forgotten today. I found it to be a gripping drama filled with suspense and emotion. Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave give remarkable performances as the two leads. It is based on Lilian Helman's autobiographical book Pentimento. As an interesting aside, the story has been claimed to have been stolen by Helman from another woman. Regardless of the origin of the material, the film is fantastic and worth viewing.
