After her harrowing journey west to California, Lee Westfall has finally found a new home, one rich in gold, thanks to her magical power, a power that seems to be changing every day. But this home is rich in other ways, too: with friends who are searching for a place to be themselves, just as she is, and with love. Jefferson, her longtime best friend, hasn't stopped trying to win her heart. And Lee is more and more tempted to say yes. But her uncle Hiram hasn't given up his quest to get Lee and her power under his control. When she's kidnapped and taken to him, Lee sees firsthand the depths of her uncle's villainy. Yet Lee's magic is growing. Gold no longer simply sings to her, it listens. It obeys her call. Is it enough to destroy her uncle once and for all?

I love this series. I can't wait to read the third one. This sequel was intense and delved deeper into the characters and Leah's powers.

The thing I appreciated the most about this book was the commentary on privilege and the prejudice against the Chinese and the Indians of the time. They were so brutally tortured and take advantage of that I greatly appreciated Carson giving the reader that perspective. It wasn't just about the gold rush or the kidnapping or Leah's history. It was also with her reaction to the prejudice and the circumstances happening in the community around her. There was a great social commentary there and it enhanced the story so much.

The third book is already out and I can't wait to read it. I want to see what happens to Leah and Jefferson specifically. I also want to see how Leah's powers and reputation continues to develop over the course of California coming into statehood.

Another great read with a satisfying ending.

Fast Paced sequel to "Walk on Earth a Stranger", Leah is still finding gold during the California Gold Rush and dealing with hard choices when it comes to love, friends and family. I enjoyed the strong woman character in Leah, she is believable and completely in over her head. Can't wait for the next book!
