A nice collection of stories. I enjoy Atwood's style and meter. Time to read more...
Borrowed from Ruth Lindh--outstanding odd stories. Oct 2018
Atwood refers to characters in some of her previous novels in this series of short stories. As usual she is enigmatic and prophetic. The "stone mattress" story was the best but several were very memorable. Would "our turn" mobs ever challenge the old and frail if resources on the planet became over stressed?
I read this book for the "A Short Story" part of my 2018 reading challenge. I really enjoyed it, I liked all of the different characters and the way many of them related.
Stone Mattress, by Margaret Atwood, is a collection of short stories that drags your mind from one extreme to the other. Some stories are eerie and some are just peculiar, the one thing they all have in common is that you’re always just on the edge of being too uncomfortable. Even in the lighter fare, a part of you will find it almost too sinister to go on. It’s very much a thriller, but not necessarily in the obvious way. I loved the way each character was carefully crafted, and even though I certainly didn’t like all of them, there were also ones I felt for, and ones I just wanted to reach out and help. I’m not usually one to enjoy being scared by what I read, but this collection was absolutely riveting.

This is yet another clever, original, provocative collection by one of my Mt. Rushmore authors. Atwood delivers a set of stories that challenged our preconceptions about aging and the supposed golden years.
I will read ANYTHING by Margaret Atwood I love her so much. I liked the first three stories, which make up a little novella of sorts, and the title story "Stone Mattress".
Great read! Recommend.
It's best to read the novel The Robber Bride before reading the short story: I Dream of Zenia with the Bright Red Teeth.
A great collection of short stories.
Margaret Atwood is at her best with short stories, and these are no exception. I love that they offer different perspectives of the same events, reminding us of what a strong role perception plays in history. The characters are beautifully complex and individualized.
