There's a lot of humor that hasn't aged well, but it's a great overview of the history of the NBA. I still open up my copy as a reference to read bits on players who came just before my time, or were big before I followed the NBA.

If you're a basketball fan and haven't read this book you're doing it wrong. Great look at the influential players and teams in NBA history.

Author Bill Simmons brings this book containing mass amounts of basketball knowledge. Dating all the way back to the ABA days, Simmons gradually plows through the most important times in basketball and the people involved. Almost every page contains footnotes which tell their own story. This book gives a perspective of how the game of basketball was played in the past and how it is now, and it offers many comparisons between past and present players. Simmons has been around basketball for his whole life and the stories he shares are very enjoyable. One of the most interesting sections of this book is the ranking of the best players of all-time. Every player has their own set of paragraphs followed by Simmons’ explanation of why they should be placed where they are. The player also has his accomplishments listed to gain a sense of what they had or have done over their career thus far. Also, Simmons tackles the debate of Bill Russell vs. Wilt Chamberlain and looks at the debate from many angles. It should be pointed out that Simmons grew up a Celtics fan and will always bleed green, so this causes some bias throughout the book. Nothing too harsh though. Overall, if you are a hardcore basketball fan this is the book for you.

Bill Simmons is arguably the oracle of basketball history. How else do you describe someone who has invested this much time and energy into producing a nearly 700 page tome, ranking the all-time best teams, players, and merits of each season’s MVP?

The footnotes are fantastic – particularly funny are those that reference Isiah, Rick Barry (a real choad, that teammates and opponents disliked), Dennis Johnson, and Kobe.

There is a strong Celtic bias (Simmons grew up watching games at The Garden as a kid) and naturally, an anti-Lakers theme (especially Kareem) at times, but it certainly didn’t take away my enjoyment in reading this colossal compendium.

If you are a true fan of Basketball than this is the book for you. Anything that has or will happen in the Association (NBA), has been well documented here. The author has a bias towards anything Celtic (having grown up in Boston, but has written a well thought out novel.

Well worth the time spent.
