As I was reading this, I struggled for a while to put my finger on what, precisely, was so satisfying about it for me as a reader. Finally, I realized that it was really refreshing to read a middle grade sci-fi book that felt somewhat grounded in science, in the way that some adult sci-fi is. This wasn't some vague dystopian future, or 1,000 years from now in some other universe where Earth isn't even remembered -- it feels more grounded in some semblance of reality, and that made it a really compelling read. This book is largely a long introduction to a series -- the ending leaves much unresolved -- but it's such a GOOD introduction that I didn't even mind. This is easily the best kids' sci-fi I've read in a long, long time.
