I discovered the map halfway through the book; it would have been helpful at the beginning, or add a table of contents. Photographs were not labelled. The author uses imprecise language, it reminded me of a diary. The author strikes me as naïve, ignorant of Haiti's culture, and not very self aware. She could even be accused of being class-biased and imperialist. Otherwise an easy read.

Julia Alvarez does a wonderful job bridging 3 cultures while using humour!

Always interesting to read about the reasons to travel in another country.
