Calvin and Katie, growing up in North Carolina, are fascinated with science and modern technology. They learn from their grandfather, an inventor, who shares with them recent scientific discoveries and the potential they provide for his new invention, Trowbridge. Gramps also entertains them with stories about growing up in a small town in Wisconsin in the 1950s. However, to their frustration, he will not tell them about certain mysterious activities with his best friend Harv. The invention of Trowbridge finally shows them, after some unexpected adventures, why he could never share this part of his life with them.
