Based on creative solutions gathered through experience, London-based interior designer Sara Emslie has produced a charming new book, "Beautifully Small: Clever Ideas for Compact Spaces." In the opening chapters, Emslie succinctly and accurately outlines the common issues of living in tight quarters, then takes the reader on a tour of 13 inspirational projects spread across Denmark, Sweden, France, and the UK. Each tiny space embodies the same lesson: “It all comes down to squeezing space out of even the most compact interior through the combination of creative problem solving, clever remodeling, and design interventions.”

Emslie's book begins in her own home, a classic 19th-century British "two-up, two-down" originally designed as workers' housing. Each room measures no larger than 11.5 feet by 11.5 feet but the author has created efficient warmth. She uses metal bistro chairs, which fold up when not in use, and displays sightly kitchen utensils on her mantle.

The book showcases rooms with stately cast-iron fireplaces, open shelving housed in chimney alcoves and tongue-and-groove paneling that conceals under-the-stair storage cabinets. Wooden shutters marry form and function and guest rooms do double duty as home offices. "Beautifully Small" may sound like an oxymoron but the book certainly shows how to transform tiny into tremendous.
