As is often the case with second books in series (particularly in fantasy series, I think), this suffers by virtue of the fact that it is totally incomprehensible to anyone who hasn't read the first book, and will likely even be a bit confusing to readers who don't remember the first book perfectly (i.e. yours truly). However, the fact remains that I find the cool magical alt-historical world of this series to be really interesting, and once you get into the action of the book, it's fast-paced and exciting. The last quarter of the book is particularly action-heavy, with lots of groundwork laid for what promises to be an exciting book 3.
