I tend to think of Edgar Allan Poe as the fully-formed poet and author, so reading about him as a teenager on the verge of manhood (and authorhood) was refreshing. Young Edgar Allan Poe struggles with embracing his dark muse, a macabre manifestation whom he names Lenore. He’s torn between his passion for his art, the need for money, and getting his foster father’s support. This is a dramatic, darkly fantastical tale mixing imagination and history which both old and new fans of the poet will enjoy. I especially enjoyed the bits of Poe’s verses which accentuated the drama of his character and lent a brooding romanticism to the story.
