"In 1944, twenty-three-year-old Tess DeMello abruptly ends her engagement to the love of her life when she marries a mysterious stranger and moves to Hickory, North Carolina, a small town struggling with racial tension and the hardships imposed by World War II. Tess's new husband, Henry Kraft, is a secretive man who often stays out all night, hides money from his new wife, and shows no interest in making love. Tess quickly realizes she's trapped in a strange and loveless marriage with no way out. The people of Hickory love and respect Henry and see Tess as an outsider, treating her with suspicion and disdain, especially after one of the town's prominent citizens dies in a terrible accident and Tess is blamed. Tess suspects people are talking about her, plotting behind her back, and following her as she walks around town. What does everyone know about Henry that she does not? Feeling alone and adrift, Tess turns to the one person who seems to understand her, a local medium who gives her hope but seems to know more than he's letting on. When a sudden polio epidemic strikes the town, the townspeople band together to build a polio hospital. Tess, who has a nursing degree, bucks Henry's wishes and begins to work at the hospital, finding meaning in nursing the young victims. Yet at home, Henry's actions grow more alarming by the day. As Tess works to save the lives of her patients, can she untangle her husband's mysterious behavior and save her own life?"-- Provided by publisher

A quick and interesting read based on true events, where the most interesting developments happen at the end only. Solid novel, but nothing more than that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It helped me understand how bad the polio epidemic was before the discovery of the vaccine. Although it’s only a part of the story it also helped me understand the separation of the races in the 1940’s and how people had to adapt and go about their lives in a different way than we do today.

I read "The Dream Daughter" and couldn't put it down. Started this one and couldn't put it I have all her books on my queue! They are just good, readable stories...nothing rocket-science cerebral, just good reads!

I just finished this book & it is still "with" me -- I really liked it. Set in the early 1940's, a young engaged girl gets intoxicated one night and the resulting consequences lead to so many changes. There are mysteries involved, love affairs and lots of drama. This is a historical fiction about the polio epidemic in North Carolina.

Definitely a 5 star story!
I've read a lot of Diane Chamberlain's books and really enjoyed them all, this one rates right up at the top! A story with so many different facets to it and it kept me interested right to the end. After so many adversities along the way, it was very satisfying to have a happy ending.

I am so grateful to great authors like Diane Chamberlain for the hours they transport me away from whatever pain, crises, or just plain overload is going on in my life - and, at the same time teach me about history, cultures, etc., and inspire me as their characters learn and grow!
The description of this title had me putting it off until it was the last book on my "for later" shelf, but the story was so much deeper and more complicated than I expected from a "marriage for convenience" story. Yes, there were hints throughout about the way(s) the story would wrap up, but even they wouldn't have led me to guess why some things happened the way they did, or how they would work out.

Couldn't put this book it in 2 days. Fascinating story about a time in history that I knew nothing about. Love this author.
