This, Octavia Butler's last novel, is probably my least favorite of her work. Though I liked her take on the vampire mythology, I found the writing stilted and the sex scenes tedious and repetitive. I literally "fast-forwarded" through them. I kept meaning to check to see if this was written during the vampire craze started first by Anne Rice, then brought to its ridiculous end in the Twilight trilogy, but I'm too lazy to investigate. I did enjoy the scenes set in the PNW—always fun reading about areas I'm familiar with like Gold Bar, Arlington, and Darrington.
