Earth is a part of the Deepa Mehta film trilogy which also contains Fire and Water. This film follows the life of young Indians before Independence from Great Britain. Though our young protagonists are Muslims, Hindus, Parsees and Sikhs, their friendships will be destroyed with the partition of Pakistan from India. Many of the protagonists will be dead at film’s end, as over 1 million persons from the Indian continent would be slaughtered because they were the wrong religion without an opportunity to flee to safety. Until even today, Pakistanis and Indians are enemies, yet before partition, they were neighbors and had learned how to tolerate each other’s religious beliefs. I suspect that the young girl afflicted with polio is a symbol of Indian/Pakistan's affliction even to this day.
