And interesting fictional story about something that occurred several times during the American Civil War: Women disguising themselves a men and enlisting. Some were prostitutes. Some enlisted out a desire to serve. Many were the mothers or the sisters of young soldiers or, as in this story, a young bride. All were often harshly punished if discovered. The book as described as a romance, but for me in the plain-spoken quality of the main character it doesn't really read that way. I found it compelling and even moving. For a non-fiction account, read "They Fought Like Demons: Women Soldiers in the American Civil War" by DeAnne Blanton.
