This movie did not do the book justice. It was a good movie, don’t get me wrong, but it was missing a lot of crucial elements that were included in the book. Everyone knows the books are always better than the movies, but this movie came pretty close. Rudy Steiner asks Liesel for kisses quite often in the book, but in the movie, it was only asked for once. This made less of a connection between the two characters, especially towards the end. (You are going to have to watch the movie to find out what happens in the end). To be completely honest, I cried… a lot. It was quite emotional. The casting wasn’t the best through. Rudy kinda looks related to Liesel which makes the relationship awkward. If they chose a boy who looked a little different or if they changed the appearance of Rudy, it would’ve sold much better. Overall, a fantastic movie! 5 out of 5 stars! @SpookyCat of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library All in all I have to say it was a decent approach at recreating the stellar novel that we have all adored, and The Book Thief was a movie that made me cry even though I knew the storyline. I really wished that some of the characters were portrayed better though; like Liesel could have been a bit more mischievous in terms of her book stealing and childhood tactics. Rudy, Papa, Mama, and all the other characters are all in place and time with the setting and background of the story. It was a bit shortened, however, and some very meaningful and impactful small conversations and details were left out. In my opinion the small things make a big difference considering those were some moments that made me love the book even more (ex. When Papa brought eggs and said “they were out of shoes” to Mama). Concluding this review, I would say that this is a recommendation from me however if you really enjoyed and want more, read the book and you can appreciate the depth more. I cried and laughed during the film too, and in my opinion Papa was the best character portrayed in the movie. - @jewelreader of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
