I am so impressed with the books I have read lately that take on the weight of adolescent mental illness. I have battled with depression and anxiety, so although I don't have a true understanding of what it's like to have OCD, I can relate to some of the experiences in this book. Toten captures the inner battles so well, and nothing in the book stigmatizes or belittles mental illness. And the way Adam starts to realize that he's taking care of everyone but himself? I remember those conversations! In many ways, though, this book is not about Adam's struggle with OCD. It's just another YA book about typical high school issues: family drama, sexual tension/crushes/dating, figuring out who you are within a group of friends. And that is wonderful to me - it's something I wish I had been reading when I was in high school.
