As much as I enjoy novels and works of non-fiction, short fiction is still among one of my favorite things to read. It is usually well-written, often exploring unusual themes, and can be read in one short sitting. I love that it provides a complete story in a small package. Here are some of my all-time favorites, enjoy!
This entire collection is amazing, not a bad apple in the bunch. Vonnegut is a master at conveying serious messages and exploring darker themes with satire and humor.

This collection is generally perceived as his best, but I would also highly recommend his other short story collections as well as his poetry.

I love this funny, twisted collection by this sometimes-local author. If you have lived any length of time in Florida, you will appreciate his use of it's weird side as a setting for a few of the stories.

I included this in my list because "The Lottery," chilling and creepy, made me fall in love with short fiction.

This collection of short novels by Stephen King, published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, is something I always recommend to people who say they don't like Stephen King. "The Long Walk" is completely riveting. Both this story and "The Running Man" offer dark dystopian glimpses of the future. This was "The Hunger Games" way before Suzanne Collins. Longer works of "short" fiction, but deserving of a spot on this list.

Cheever is a master of the short story. He is an observant writer, funny, with a knack for dialogue and surprising endings. This collection won the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 and it was well-deserved.

I love this book and the characters that Steve Martin created. It's honest and sweet storytelling. Another piece of long "short" fiction. Side note- I like the term novella, it's cute.

This collection contains "A Rose for Emily," one of my favorite pieces of short fiction. While Faulkner's writing is not traditionally considered Southern Gothic, he definitely explored elements of the style in this piece.
